Caring for Your Class 2 Bars

  • What are Class 2 Bars?

Class 2 Bars are an orthodontic appliances that are bonded directly to your teeth to correct an overbite with elastics.

We pair the class 2 bars with a lower holding arch (LHA) or a clear retainer to allow for the use of stronger rubber bands at the beginning of treatment, which will get much of the hard work of bite correction accomplished quickly.

You’ll be on your way toward your perfect smile quickly!

  • Technology for the Win

We work closely with our lab to custom make a 3D printed lower holding arch appliance that fits your teeth perfectly!

We then customize the bonded bars during your appointment for an optimized treatment approach.

  • Quick and easy application

On the day of your start, class 2 bars are bonded to teeth in minutes, and LHA is seated.

Your orthodontic assistant will provide instructions on using rubber bands and answer all of your questions.

See below for a rubber band "how-to”!

  • You're in Control

Please consistently wear your elastics 22 hours a day to accelerate your treatment time, getting to your perfect smile quicker!

Care & Maintenance

  • Brushing and Flossing

    Brush and floss daily.

Brush gently in a circular motion.

Make sure to get the outer, inner, and chewing surfaces of each tooth. Don’t forget to clean your gums!

Brush for 4 minutes (instead of the usual 2 minutes) to ensure all surfaces are clean and healthy.

Brush after snacks and meals to remove any leftover food.

Continue to see your general dentist for regular cleanings throughout treatment.

  • Loose or Broken Appliance?

Loose or broken Class 2 Bars or LHAs can be uncomfortable — call the clinic immediately if these issues arise, and we’ll determine the urgency with you and schedule a comfort appointment or make a note for your next visit.

These visits are expected from time to time and are included in your treatment plan at no additional cost to you.

You can avoid breaking your bars by avoiding chewing on hard objects and crunchy, sticky, or hard foods.

Rubber Bands: How & Why

Lower Hook First, Then Upper Hook

Attach the rubber band to the hook on the band of the lower holding arch (LHA). Stretch to attach to the hook at the front of the bar bonded to upper teeth

24/7, Well Almost…

Wear your rubber bands at least 20 hours a day, removing only when eating and brushing your teeth. These are great times to put in a new band as they will lose their elasticity during wear. Wearing your rubber bands as much as possible makes your treatment more efficient.
