Caring for Your
Braces
-

What are Braces?
Bonded braces remain the standard for orthodontic care, and this is true at Meyer Orthodontics. We use the highest quality, American-made braces and leverage proven technology and specialized expertise to place brackets for optimal results. Approximately 85% of our patients have treatment plans involving bonded braces. You’re in good company!
-

Quick and Easy Application
After cleaning the tooth, the brackets are glued to the teeth (like a sticker!). This process takes minutes and is painless, with NO needles or drilling involved.
-

Comfort During Treatment
You may notice soreness as the teeth start to move. We recommend taking your preferred over-the-counter pain reliever before your visit and as needed to avoid discomfort during the first few days of treatment. Once the teeth begin to move, there should be minimal discomfort.
-

Movement Over Time
Brackets act like handles to hold the wire to the teeth. Over time, the teeth move to the shape of the wire.
Care & Maintenance
-
Brushing and Flossing
Brush gently in a circular motion.
Make sure to get the outer, inner, and chewing surfaces of each tooth. Don’t forget to clean your gums!
Brush for 4 minutes (instead of the usual 2 minutes) to ensure all surfaces are clean and healthy.
Brush after snacks and meals to remove any leftover food.

Broken Brackets?
Broken brackets or pokey wires can be uncomfortable — call the clinic immediately if these issues arise, and we’ll determine the urgency with you and schedule a comfort appointment or make a note for your next visit. These visits are expected from time to time and are included in your treatment plan at no additional cost to you.
You can avoid broken brackets by avoiding chewing on hard objects and crunchy, sticky, or hard foods.
